The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is addressing crows disrupting power in the Ashanti Sub-Transmission region.
In a statement, ECG's Ashanti regional office noted that crows cause frequent power outages. This situation creates challenges for operations and inconveniences consumers.
The company assured the public that its team is working to resolve these issues. ECG emphasized its commitment to a stable power supply and requested public cooperation.
Crows are intelligent birds that pose unexpected hazards to power networks. They often perch on transmission lines, causing disruptions in several ways:
- Short circuits and line trips affect the power supply.
- Nests with metallic materials can damage equipment.
- Droppings may cause insulation breakdown under humid conditions.
- Increased maintenance costs strain resources.
The most affected areas include Barekese, Akyawkrom, Effiduase, Kumawu, Bekwai, New Edubiase, Dunkwa, and Manso Nkwanta. These disruptions impact the reliability of power supply and overall network efficiency.
To tackle this issue, ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission team will implement preventive measures:
- Physical barriers like bird spikes and perch deterrents will minimize roosting.
- Optimized line design will improve conductor spacing and insulation.
- Routine nest removal will help deter nesting on structures.
- Acoustic and visual disruptors will discourage perching with distress calls and decoys.
- Regular line patrols will allow for early detection of faults caused by birds.
These measures aim to reduce crows' impact on transmission infrastructure. They also seek to ensure reliable power for consumers in the Ashanti Region.
To enhance supply reliability, key managers have patrolled problematic feeders like Kuntenase-Bekwai. They are identifying challenges affecting stability in the area.
