A/R: Drivers defy GPRTU fare reduction directive, cite high operating costs

Most commercial drivers in the Ashanti Region are ignoring the GPRTU's directive. The transport union announced a fare reduction of 15%. However, drivers say this change will start on Monday, May 26.

During a visit to various transport terminals, most drivers were still charging old fares. Only a few had implemented the new rates. Some drivers promised to comply with the new fares starting Monday.

Those who reduced their fares expressed dissatisfaction with the directive. They cited high costs for spare parts and vehicle maintenance as concerns.

The GPRTU announced the fare reduction to ease financial burdens on Ghanaians. This decision follows the recent appreciation of the cedi and lower fuel prices.

Solomon Frimpong, a commercial driver, stated, “We are waiting for new fares from our leadership.” He added that until then, they would continue using old fares.

John Mensah, another driver, mentioned that while they reduced their fares, they were unhappy with it. He explained that spare part prices remain unchanged. Thus, this fare reduction negatively impacts drivers' earnings.
