A/R: Illegal fuel station for galamsey discovered at Jimmirah Forest Reserve

A joint operation by the Minerals Development Fund (MDF) and security agencies found an illegal fuel station in the Jimmirah Forest Reserve. This area is located in the Ashanti Region. Authorities believe the station supplied fuel for illegal mining equipment.

The raid took place on Thursday, June 5. Several foreign nationals were arrested during this operation. They are suspected of leading illegal mining activities in the forest reserve.

Dr. Hannah Bissiw, Administrator of the MDF, spoke to journalists after the raid. She condemned the environmental damage caused by these activities. She expressed frustration on behalf of affected communities.

Dr. Bissiw emphasized that those arrested should not be deported immediately. They must be held accountable for their actions first. "The community is fed up," she said, highlighting their concerns about land and water destruction.

She criticized foreign miners who show no remorse for their actions. "They have destroyed our water bodies," she stated firmly. Dr. Bissiw insisted that legal consequences must follow before any deportation occurs.

She added that those responsible should contribute to restoring the Offin River before leaving Ghana.
