The National Investigations Bureau is searching for people using government officials' names to extort money from small-scale miners.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene leads the Ashanti Regional Security Council. He reports ongoing complaints from officials about misuse of their names. Some cases have been referred to the NIB for investigation.
He spoke at a meeting with the Concerned National Small Scale Miners Association and the Ashanti Regional Minister. The focus was on improving the mining industry for a sustainable environment.
Miners expressed concerns about individuals extorting money under the guise of fighting illegal mining.
In response, Dr. Amoakohene mentioned existing interventions against influence peddling. He aims to find a scapegoat to eliminate such practices in illegal mining.
He urged small-scale miners to help by reporting those who make demands for money. The Regional Coordinating Council has launched a campaign against illegal mining, led by security operatives and enforcement agencies.
The task force has already reclaimed some forest areas from illegal miners. Dr. Amoakohene emphasized that the fight against galamsey will continue.
“The President has made his stance clear on mining,” he said. “No activities in forests, roadsides, or water bodies.” He assured support for any efforts that promote responsible practices in mining.
