Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region have made serious accusations. They claim military officers are deliberately targeting their members. This follows the death of a 36-year-old man in Nyinahin, Atwima Mponua District.
The deceased, Akwasi Lala, also known as Kushivi, was allegedly shot by military officers. He was confronted while wearing a military camouflage uniform. The incident occurred on Thursday, April 24, during a funeral procession.
A group of mourners was heading to the cemetery when military officers stopped them. After spotting Lala in his attire, they confronted him. Three other mourners were injured by gunfire from the officers.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command is investigating the incident. They have requested that the Military High Command present the involved officers for questioning. NDC leaders believe this targeting is part of a larger pattern.
They referenced another incident in Obuasi where eight miners died after being shot by military personnel. Augustus Nana Kwesi Andrews, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, visited Lala's family to offer condolences. He urged President John Dramani Mahama to investigate thoroughly and hold those responsible accountable.
Andrews expressed sadness over Lala's death and condemned the actions of the military. He stated that arresting someone should not involve opening fire on them. He emphasized that justice is needed for both Lala’s family and previous victims in Obuasi.
He noted that both Lala and those killed in Obuasi were NDC members. Andrews questioned whether these incidents were politically motivated or not.
