A/R: NPP’s Regional Organizer demands Wontumi’s release

Dr. Francis Adomako, the Ashanti Regional Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is calling for the release of Chairman Wontumi. Wontumi, whose real name is Bernard Antwi Boasiako, is in custody at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Adomako's demand follows Wontumi's legal team withdrawing a motion. This motion sought a review of his GH¢50 million bail condition. It was originally filed on May 30, 2025, and scheduled for hearing on June 3. However, it was withdrawn on June 2.

Wontumi had challenged the bail terms set by EOCO. He described them as excessive and obstructive to his release. His lawyers argued that he had already met all conditions.

On Citi Prime News with Charles Owusu Kumi, Dr. Adomako expressed confusion over Wontumi's continued detention. He stated, “We don’t know what is keeping our regional chairman in EOCO.” He criticized the complicated situation and emphasized that all bail requirements were satisfied.

Wontumi is under investigation by EOCO for alleged money laundering and fraud. He was arrested on May 28, 2025, and granted bail of GH¢50 million with two sureties.

Initially, his legal team struggled to meet these conditions. However, lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi confirmed on May 30 that they complied fully with all requirements.

A new legal challenge has delayed Wontumi’s release further. Appiah-Kubi mentioned encountering difficulties but aimed to resolve them quickly. He stated he would focus on legal matters rather than politics.

On June 2, Wontumi withdrew his legal challenge to expedite his release from EOCO custody.
