A Rocha Ghana applauds police reshuffle in mining areas; demands tougher action

A Rocha Ghana, an environmental advocacy group, praised the government. They commended the decision to transfer police commanders in mining areas. This reshuffle affects regional, divisional, and district commanders.

The goal is to address illegal mining more effectively. Many officers have served long periods without making progress. The group sees this as a positive step in the fight against illegal mining.

Daryl Bosu, Deputy National Director of Operations at A Rocha Ghana, spoke on Channel One TV. He believes this decision will promote accountability among police commanders. He expressed happiness that the government is taking these issues seriously.

Bosu noted that police often patrol mining communities but fail to stop illegal activities. He emphasized the need for accountability from police in these areas.

He also raised concerns about the government's recent efforts against illegal mining. He described them as inadequate given the problem's scale. Bosu called for a stronger approach to tackle illegal mining.

He mentioned past calls for a state of emergency and other measures. These were promises made by officials that have not been fulfilled. Bosu expected a more aggressive response to illegal mining activities.

Overall, he feels the government's actions have not met expectations so far.
