A Ghanaian man praised President John Dramani Mahama after buying kenkey. He purchased two balls for GHS 3 at Agyeman Pentecost Junction in Labadi Town.
In a viral video, he expressed surprise and excitement. He celebrated joyfully upon learning the price of the kenkey. He shouted Mahama’s name in gratitude, saying, “A ball of kenkey is GH¢3? John Mahama, Onaapo! Within two or three months, it will be GH¢2. God bless you.”
Some Ghanaians reacted to his celebration online. One person questioned if prices had really dropped that much. They mentioned their mother said kenkey costs GHS 5 or 7 now.
Another commenter noted that kenkey has always been cheap in Labadi. They claimed it can be found for GHS 2 in their area.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) announced a plan to reduce prices within 60 days.
On May 14, Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare met with trade unions about cedi appreciation and market prices.
GUTA and AGI explained that current prices remain high due to older stock bought at higher rates.
AGI President Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke commended the government’s efforts. He stated they are committed to reflecting these gains in pricing soon.
He believes the impact of a stronger cedi will show within 60 days in wholesale and retail prices.
