‘A betrayal of Ghana’s rivers’ - CDM blasts Mahama over Galamsey inaction

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s administration. They accuse it of failing to address illegal mining, known as galamsey, in Ghana.

In a press statement on May 21, the CDM called the government's environmental record “a national disgrace.” They described it as “an environmental catastrophe.”

The group claims that the NDC's 2024 campaign promises are empty. These promises include auditing mining concessions and banning mining in water bodies.

CDM highlighted the poisoned state of major rivers like Pra, Ankobra, Offin, Tano, and Birim. They stated these rivers have become “toxic” under Mahama’s leadership.

“President Mahama cannot claim ignorance or helplessness,” the statement said. The group believes that problems are worsening due to his silence.

They accused the government of complicity in the rise of galamsey operations. This reflects a breakdown of enforcement and political will.

CDM is calling for immediate action from the President. They demand he declare a state of emergency in all affected areas.

“The rivers are bleeding. The forests are dying. The people are suffering,” they stated. A state of emergency is overdue; it must be declared now to avoid complicity.
