AG acting within his mandate – Srem-Sai refutes Minority’s claims

Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, has denied allegations from the Minority in Parliament. They claim the Attorney-General is overstepping his constitutional role. The accusations include ordering raids, arrests, and investigations into former officials.

The Minority caucus argues that the Attorney-General misuses his office. They say his main duty is to provide legal advice to investigative bodies and assist courts. They believe his involvement in law enforcement undermines due process and the rule of law.

In an interview with Citi FM on Monday, March 24, 2025, Dr. Srem-Sai called these claims unfounded. He stressed that the Attorney-General's powers go beyond just advisory roles.

He explained that the Attorney-General is responsible for investigations and prosecutions. This authority is established within the country’s legal framework. Agencies have been created under this framework, granting powers to the Attorney-General.

Dr. Srem-Sai argued against viewing the Attorney-General as a neutral observer. He stated that this interpretation misreads the law. He urged anyone with such views to reconsider after reviewing legal texts.

He reaffirmed that the Attorney-General's role includes both prosecutorial and investigative duties. He assured the public that ongoing investigations into former appointees are lawful and proper.
