AG dismisses calls to suspend Chief Justice removal process

Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has dismissed calls for President John Mahama to pause ongoing proceedings. These proceedings involve determining a prima facie case on petitions to remove the Chief Justice.

His comments came after another adjournment by the Supreme Court. This adjournment was due to the absence of Justice Samuel Asiedu, one of the five Justices presiding over the case. Presiding Judge Henrietta Mensah Bonsu explained that they faced “problems” and had to adjourn for unavoidable reasons.

The injunction application was filed by lawyer Godfred Yeboah Dame. It aims to stop the President from continuing with the petition review until the Supreme Court rules on it.

After the adjournment, Dr. Ayine spoke to the media. He argued that the President must proceed with the process, despite the pending court application.

He questioned whether anyone believes that a court order already exists preventing this action. Dr. Ayine emphasized that no legal basis stops the President from fulfilling his constitutional duties.

He stated, “It is his constitutional duty,” and added that laws clearly state public officials cannot be prevented from performing their roles.
