Lawyers for Kwabena Adu Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, have criticized Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine. They accuse him of conducting a "trial by media." They believe he should allow due process to happen.
In a legal letter dated March 24, Zoe, Akyea & Co. condemned the AG's actions. They claim he publicly labeled their clients as "state looters" during a press conference. This occurred while investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) were still ongoing.
The lawyers stated that the Attorney-General has prejudged their clients in public opinion. They argued that he presented unverified information as “evidence.” This action harms public perception before any formal charges are made.
They emphasized that this conduct violates constitutional protections for suspects. The lawyers expressed disbelief at the AG's comfort with making statements without proof beyond reasonable doubt. They described him as a media persecutor who acts as a judge while claiming to investigate.
The letter also criticized how political changes should not undermine the rule of law. It accused the AG of providing one-sided information to the press. The lawyers warned that this prejudice could lead to defamation claims in court.
They drew comparisons between prosecution and persecution in their argument. The lawyers asserted that trying cases in the press undermines impartiality in prosecution. They concluded by stating this approach is an affront to the rule of law.
