Anti-corruption advocate Edem Senanu praised the Attorney General’s commitment. He believes this marks a shift toward greater transparency. It also serves as a deterrent against corruption.
Senanu's comments follow investigations into Kwabena Adu-Boahene. He is the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB). The investigations uncovered properties and suspicious financial transactions linked to misappropriated state funds.
Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine revealed that Adu-Boahene embezzled millions. These funds were intended for a cyber defense project. Instead, he diverted them into real estate investments in Accra and overseas.
Adu-Boahene allegedly used a private company he operated with his wife. This company siphoned funds from a government contract, leading to significant personal wealth.
Senanu stated that officials engaging in corrupt practices can no longer evade scrutiny. “It’s an important milestone,” he said in an interview on Joy FM's Top Story on March 24. Public officers must realize their misconduct is more likely to be exposed now.
Regarding the AG’s confidence in prosecuting corruption cases, Senanu acknowledged the challenge ahead. While the AG seems convinced he has strong evidence, proving guilt in court is crucial. “It’s one thing for the AG to claim he has evidence,” he remarked.
He added that presenting evidence convincingly in court is essential for securing convictions beyond reasonable doubt. He noted that it would be premature to speculate about political motives or coincidences before trial.
In response to allegations of politically motivated investigations, Senanu dismissed claims of witch-hunting. He argued that new administrations should scrutinize their predecessors' actions. “This is how accountability works,” he explained, emphasizing that governance involves examining past administrations closely.
