AGA empowers 127 artisans with entrepreneurial skills and start-up kits to reduce unemployment in Obuasi

AngloGold Ashanti's Obuasi Mine aims to reduce unemployment in its area. The company has empowered over 120 artisans with entrepreneurial skills. This initiative boosts their productivity and helps them become self-sufficient.

In partnership with several organizations, the mine provided start-up kits. The artisans received these kits after completing technical and vocational training. They trained at Mac Partners Training Institute and the Enterprise and Skills Development Centre (ESDC).

The training covered various fields, including fashion design, welding, electronics, and electrical work. At a ceremony in Obuasi, artisans expressed gratitude to AngloGold Ashanti and its partners. They appreciated the support that prepares them for entrepreneurship.

Edmund Oduro Agyei is the Community Relations Manager at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine. He spoke about the initiative during the event. It is part of a 10-year socioeconomic development plan for local communities.

A needs assessment revealed many artisans lacked certifications for their skills. This lack of certification hindered their ability to secure formal contracts. Mr. Oduro emphasized that this situation limited their income potential.

He also noted that many artisans do not use effective business management practices. This contributes to lower income levels among them. Additionally, uncertified artisans working in communities pose safety risks.

Mr. Oduro praised GIZ and NAELP for helping equip the artisans with tools. He reaffirmed AGA’s commitment to empowering residents with essential skills. He encouraged participants to positively impact their communities using their new training.

Frank Asare is the National Coordinator for NAELP. He highlighted that this initiative creates new opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. Economic prosperity can follow from these efforts.
