AGI backs Mahama’s business platform, urges tax, capital reforms

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) is ready to work with the government. They aim to tackle major issues in the business community. This follows plans for a National Business Consultative Platform.

President John Dramani Mahama announced this initiative. It aims to improve engagement between the government and private sector. The platform will provide feedback on policies and find solutions for business growth.

In an interview with Citi News, Tsonam Akpeloo spoke about key concerns. He highlighted heavy taxes and challenges in securing capital. "We are asking the government to reduce taxes affecting growth," he said.

He also mentioned the costs associated with accessing capital. "These issues need government attention," Akpeloo added. He believes that when the president focuses on these matters, better decisions can be made.

Akpeloo emphasized a structured approach for meetings with the government. He expressed willingness to help set up this platform for meaningful dialogue.

Additionally, he urged the government to boost local industries' capacity. This would help them compete in producing essential products and reduce imports.

"The government needs drastic measures to promote local production," he stated. There are products Ghana can produce competitively, both for local use and export.

He called for discouraging imports of locally producible items. This would enable local industries to operate at full capacity, which is currently only 50%.

Increasing production will create jobs, according to Akpeloo. The government's support is crucial in achieving this goal.
