AMA begins crackdown on street trading in Accra’s CBD

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has started a decongestion exercise. This effort aims to remove street traders from the Central Business District (CBD). The goal is to restore order and improve sanitation in the city center.

On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, AMA task forces began their work. They were supported by the Ghana Police Service. Together, they dismantled makeshift stalls and unauthorized kiosks. They also removed vendors from pavements and roadsides in key CBD areas.

According to the AMA, this operation enforces city bylaws. It aims to ease congestion and ensure safe movement for pedestrians and vehicles.

The first phase focuses on areas around the AMA Head Office. This includes Kinbu Road to Railways and ECG Junction to King Tackie Tawiah Statue. It also covers Opera Square through Adabraka.
