The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is starting a decongestion exercise today. This initiative is in partnership with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly.
The operation will focus on areas around the AMA Head Office. Key locations include Kinbu Road, Railways, and ECG Junction. It will also cover the King Tackie Tawiah Statue and Opera Square to Adabraka.
Gilbert Ankrah, AMA Public Relations Officer, spoke to Citi News on Monday. He mentioned that the exercise will intensify along major routes. These routes include Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School to Cow Lane.
The plan targets all zones near the AMA Head Office. Areas around Accra City Hotel and Mövenpick Hotel will also be addressed.
Before the exercise, AMA Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey met with street hawkers. He urged them to cooperate during this cleanup effort. This initiative aims to restore order and improve sanitation in Accra.
Allotey emphasized the need for community support. He said, “We all want a better environment, and cooperation is vital.”
He also mentioned an upcoming 24-hour economy policy for street vendors. This policy will create new opportunities for selling goods overnight.
However, he requested that vendors stay off the pavement during this cleanup effort.
