AMA declares ban on drumming and noise-making ahead of 2025 Homowo festival

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a ban on drumming and noise-making. This ban will be in effect from May 12 to June 12, 2025. It is part of the cultural observances leading up to the Homowo Festival.

In a statement by Public Affairs Head Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the AMA explained the restriction. It aims to preserve peace and tradition. The ban affects all individuals and institutions in its jurisdiction, including Gamashie, Ablekuma West, and parts of Kasoa.

The AMA described this period as “a sacred time of solemnity.” They directed churches to hold services indoors without musical instruments. Loudspeakers outside religious venues are banned, along with roadside evangelism and open-air parties.

Additionally, the Ga Traditional Council has imposed a similar ban on funerals and related events during this time.

To enforce this directive, only authorized personnel may act. This includes AMA staff, Ghana Police Service members, and accredited Traditional Council representatives with proper ID. Unauthorized enforcement by individuals or groups is strictly prohibited.

The AMA urged residents in the Ga Traditional Area to cooperate. They emphasized the importance of preserving the sacred traditions of Homowo. This festival celebrates abundance after famine and reflects cultural reverence and thanksgiving.
