AMA questions Zoomlion fumigation contracts, demands review

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has raised concerns about a fumigation contract. This contract is with the Jospong Group of Companies, which operates Zoomlion Ghana Limited. The AMA claims there was a lack of consultation and transparency.

Many contracts were signed without involving key assembly members. This makes it hard to verify reports from fumigation exercises. Florence Kuukyi, the AMA’s Director of Public Health, spoke about this on April 14.

She addressed the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources. Kuukyi called for an immediate review of the fumigation contract. She emphasized the need for transparency and accountability.

Kuukyi stated that contracts are often signed without input from implementers. "They bring you a report to sign as a witness," she said. "You can choose to sign or not, but they will still be paid."

She stressed the importance of reviewing the SIP contract. Implementers should have a say in these agreements, she argued. "If they are doing it right, we will know," she added.

However, she noted that she has never witnessed any fumigation herself. Reports claim that fumigations have been completed, but she remains skeptical.
