AMA questions Zoomlion fumigation contracts, demands transparency and review

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has raised concerns about fumigation contracts. These contracts are with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, part of the Jospong Group. The AMA questions the transparency of these agreements. They also note that local authorities were not involved in the process.

Many contracts were signed without input from key Assembly staff. This makes it hard to verify if reported fumigation exercises actually took place. Florence Kuukyi, the Assembly’s Director of Public Health, shared these concerns on April 14.

She stated that contracts are often signed without involving implementers. “You are just there and they’ll bring you a report,” she said. Officers frequently sign off on reports they did not help create.

“They don’t involve you in whatever they do,” she added. Reports are presented for signature, but involvement is minimal. “You can decide to sign or not,” she explained, “but they will be paid regardless.”

Ms. Kuukyi called for a review of the Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP) contract. She emphasized that local implementers should monitor sanitation projects more closely.

“We need to have a say in this process,” she insisted. If things are done correctly, they will know; if not, they will also know. However, she noted, “I have never witnessed one fumigation.” Yet reports consistently claim that fumigation has occurred.
