AMA to begin decongestion exercise on May 20, orders all persons affected to vacate areas by close of May 19

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will begin a decongestion exercise. This operation targets specific areas on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

On Day 1, the focus will be around the AMA Head Office. Areas include Kinbu Road to Railways and ECG Junction to King Tackie Tawiah Statue. Zongo Lane and Opera Square to Adabraka are also included.

Day 2 will cover Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School. It will also include Cow Lane, UTC Road to Timber Market, and parts of Kwame Nkrumah Circle. Las Palmas and Glamour Road are part of this day too.

On Day 3, the remaining portions of the Circle will be targeted. The Kaneshie enclave, Pamprom Lane, and footbridges will also be addressed.

This three-day exercise is led by the AMA and Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA). They have support from the Ghana Police Service and other stakeholders.

The AMA issued a statement on Friday about this exercise. It enforces the AMA Hawkers Bye-Laws (2017) and Section 117(1) of the Road Traffic Regulations (2012). These laws prohibit activities that block pedestrian and vehicle movement in public areas.

Michael Kpakpo Allotey signed the statement on behalf of the Mayor of Accra. It directed affected individuals to vacate these locations by Monday, May 19, 2025.

The statement noted that prior consultations confirmed enough space exists in designated markets for traders.

Additionally, it announced plans for a 24-hour city operation model as part of urban renewal efforts. This model includes a clean-up and security task force for better sanitation and safe night-time activities.

The AMA urged public support for this exercise. They called for cooperation from affected groups to restore order in the city.
