Ablakwa announces arrest of man paid $1.5m in sale of Ghana property in Nigeria

Ghana News: Arrest of Bright Mensah Bonsu

Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the arrest of Bright Mensah Bonsu. He allegedly received $1.5 million for selling a Ghanaian property in Nigeria.

Bonsu was arrested by Ghanaian security operatives, according to the minister. He claims to be a special aide to the late Alhaji Rashid Bawa, former High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Ablakwa emphasized that the $1.5 million was not deposited into government accounts. There is no record of this cash at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Documents show that Bonsu and his associates valued the Lagos property at $5.3 million. They considered the $1.5 million as just the first payment.

The government is investigating how Bonsu received a diplomatic passport on October 18, 2023. He is expected to face prosecution soon.

Ablakwa noted that Bonsu was not an official staff member of the Ministry or High Commission. However, he was often seen with the High Commissioner.

As legal proceedings begin, it will be interesting to see how Bonsu supports his claims about acting on instructions from superiors regarding this transaction.
