The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, revealed that the Ministry spends about $15 million each year on rent. This is for Foreign Service Officers stationed worldwide.
He called this expenditure an unsustainable burden on the ministry’s finances. He urged for urgent reforms to address this issue strategically and cost-effectively.
To reduce financial strain, the Minister announced plans to acquire at least two properties each year for official use abroad. This initiative aims to invest in the long-term welfare of Foreign Service Officers. It will also gradually decrease reliance on rented accommodation.
Mr. Ablakwa highlighted that owning properties will improve security and dignity for staff representing Ghana abroad.
However, he expressed dissatisfaction with the maintenance of several government-owned properties overseas. He noted poor upkeep and deterioration of many buildings, which pose health and safety risks to occupants.
The Minister emphasized the need for a proactive maintenance culture. This would help preserve state assets' value and ensure the wellbeing of Ghanaian officers abroad.
Mr. Ablakwa also discussed challenges faced by officers in difficult or high-risk postings. He announced that these personnel would now be reposted after two years instead of longer tenures.
This change aims to alleviate psychological and physical demands in hardship areas while improving morale across the Foreign Service.
The Minister made these remarks during his visit to the Ghana High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria. This visit is part of his official tour of Benin, Nigeria, and Togo.
The tour seeks to strengthen relations with Ghanaian missions abroad, engage with citizens, and reinforce the government's commitment to improving diplomats' working conditions.
