Ablakwa should communicate Embassy closure officially not via Facebook- Larry Dogbey

Larry Dogbey, Managing Editor of The Herald newspaper, criticized Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. He took issue with Ablakwa announcing the temporary closure of Ghana’s embassy in Washington, D.C., on Facebook. Dogbey believes such an important matter needs a formal government statement.

On Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Dogbey expressed his concerns. He warned that using social media for serious announcements could harm public trust. “This is a very damning thing,” he said. He emphasized the need for an official statement signed by the minister or the PR office.

Ablakwa's announcement was made on Monday, May 26. It stated that the embassy closed due to findings from a special audit. This audit revealed a fraudulent scheme involving abuse of office and financial misconduct.

Ablakwa explained that the closure is part of efforts to restructure operations abroad. He called the decision regrettable but necessary to protect integrity and restore public confidence.

Despite agreeing with the decision, Dogbey maintained that communication should have been more formal. “This isn’t a personal issue; it’s a national crisis,” he said. An official press release would show leadership and transparency, he added.

Ablakwa's embassy shutdown sends a strong anti-corruption message, according to Elikem Kotoko.
