Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has clarified that the government’s recent suspension of post-retirement contracts will not affect academic staff in public universities.
Speaking in Accra, he assured that universities can still seek approval for post-retirement appointments through their governing councils and other legitimate channels.
This comes after a presidential directive dated April 2, 2025, signed by Dr. Calistus Mahama, halted all post-retirement contract appointments for public service staff nationwide.
The directive strictly warned against entertaining any future contract extension requests for retired personnel.
However, the Education Minister explained that public universities operate under a distinct framework and their academic functions require flexibility in staffing.
The clarification brings relief to university stakeholders who feared the blanket policy might disrupt academic continuity and expertise retention in tertiary institutions.
