The Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Ms. Kathleen Addy, has urged residents of Ablekuma North to stay calm. She also called on all Ghanaians to accept the 2024 parliamentary election results when declared by the Electoral Commission (EC).
Ms. Addy spoke at a press briefing organized by the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, May 8th. She highlighted the importance of respecting the democratic process.
"My message is for all Ghanaians, especially those in Ablekuma North," she said. "We are in a democracy where elections are part of our culture. In every election, there is a winner and a loser; there is no middle ground."
She continued, "In this election, I urge everyone to accept the results when declared. This is how we build democracy."
Tensions have risen in Ablekuma North as both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) claim victory for their candidates. The disputed outcome has increased anxiety in the area. The EC has organized a recount, but results are still pending.
Ms. Addy advised political leaders and their supporters against making premature declarations or inciting unrest. "We can fight another day," she said. "Losing is not the end of the world, nor is winning."
The Electoral Commission will announce the official parliamentary results for Ablekuma North soon.
