Accra High Court strikes out motion against anti-galamsey protest

An Accra High Court has dismissed a motion from the Ghana Police Service. The motion aimed to stop a planned protest against illegal mining in Ghana.

The court's decision came after Assistant State Attorney David Bachem requested to withdraw the motion. This allows the anti-galamsey protest to proceed on April 28.

Okatakyie Afrifa, a media personality and one of the conveners, criticized the initial motion. He called it a move made in bad faith.

The protest will start at Obra Spot near Kwame Nkrumah Circle. It will go through Ring Road and end at Liberation Square, opposite Jubilee House.

The event is set to begin at 4 PM on April 28 and continue until midnight on April 29.

In their withdrawn motion, police asked organizers to change the protest's endpoint. They argued that Liberation Square and Jubilee House are security zones.

The police also expressed concerns about the timing of the demonstration. They believe it could cause serious traffic issues in Accra and disrupt essential services.
