Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has announced plans for hawkers. He aims to provide trading space for those in unauthorized areas of the Central Business District (CBD). This initiative will happen within the next two months.
This announcement follows an ongoing decongestion exercise. The goal is to improve traffic flow and sanitation in the capital. The operation is called “Red Line.” It includes designated zones for pedestrians and regulated trading.
During a site inspection on May 21, Mayor Allotey spoke to Citi News. He emphasized his commitment to this project until its goals are achieved. “Because things are in a rush, we have to make a hasty decision,” he said.
He believes this will help in the short term. “Within a month or two, I will try and get a place for them,” he added.
Allotey also mentioned that traders should not sell on the street. He stated they know it’s not the right place to sell. Instead, he urged them to come to the market.
