The Accra Psychiatric Hospital has announced new satellite clinics. These clinics will be located in the Korle Klottey Municipality. They aim to support individuals struggling with addiction. This initiative addresses the rising cases of substance abuse in Ghana.
Management at the hospital noted that substance abuse affects youth productivity. It also contributes to various social and health challenges. They expressed concern over the increasing number of people addicted to drugs. This trend poses a significant threat to national development.
Dr. Kwadwo Marfo Obeng spoke to Citi News during a screening exercise. This event is part of a week-long initiative in Accra, organized with local health authorities. He emphasized the need for decentralized addiction treatment services.
Dr. Obeng mentioned that community leaders highlighted their needs clearly. Many people require attention before reaching critical conditions at hospitals. If care is only available at hospitals, many will not seek help. Regular outreach can aid their recovery journey, he stated.
Dr. Linda Baafi, Municipal Director of Health Services, discussed urban challenges. Managing substance abuse cases is difficult in densely populated areas. She called for stronger collaboration among health stakeholders. Expanding initiatives like the satellite clinic can improve coverage.
She noted that many people engage in substance abuse throughout the municipality. More partnerships are needed to reach as many affected individuals as possible.
