The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, promised to fix 70% of streetlights in 50 days. Channel One News monitored the situation to check progress.
Our checks showed many major roads remain dark. This raises concerns about public safety and accountability. The N1 Highway, from Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout to Lapaz, is completely unlit. Spintex Road also shows no improvements in street lighting.
Commercial driver Kojo Tuffour expressed frustration. He said motorists rely on their headlights to navigate these dark areas. "There are no streetlights on the N1 highway," he noted. "Driving is already challenging, especially for those with vision problems."
Other major roads are similarly affected. The stretch from Accra Mall to Palace Mall is still dark. Streetlights from Ridge Roundabout to Parliament House are also non-functional.
However, some areas show improvements. Streetlights from Parliament House toward Accra Sports Stadium are working. Lights were also functioning from Independence Square to Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.
Further checks at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and Tesano Police Training Institute revealed more non-functional lights. Functional streetlights are crucial for safe driving and city security. Many residents now wonder: Where are the promised streetlights for Greater Accra?
