Accra-Tema railway faces shutdown as workers protest 7-month salary arrears

Commuters using the Accra-Tema railway line should prepare for disruptions. The Ghana Railway Company may soon shut down operations.

Workers at the Accra Division of the Railway Workers Union are frustrated. They have not received salaries for seven months. If they are not paid by today, operations will stop tomorrow.

Franklin Leon Cobbinah, Branch Secretary of the union, spoke to Starr News. He said, “We’ve done our best to calm the workers down.” However, he added that it is now beyond their control.

Cobbinah described the situation as critical. Workers face financial hardship and lack communication from management or government officials. Frustration among staff is growing rapidly.

The union has issued an ultimatum to management and government authorities. They demand payment of arrears by today or face industrial action.

The workers are appealing to President John Mahama for help. They believe immediate intervention is necessary to prevent service collapse. The company’s financial situation has worsened since the administration change. Without action, public transportation and livelihoods could suffer greatly.
