Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana. He doubts the sustainability of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) decongestion drive. He believes it is another short-term effort likely to fail.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, he expressed skepticism about its long-term impact. He argued that this is yet another attempt to solve a recurring urban problem.
Dr. Zaato noted that traders in areas like Makola are very mobile. They can easily move to other markets and occupy new streets. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive policy with an "all-of-the-above" approach.
He also questioned the political will behind this initiative. Without sustained commitment, he warned, these efforts may fizzle out like past campaigns.
“I hope this is not a nine-day wonder,” he stated. “So far, nothing shows me it won’t be.” His comments came after AMA's renewed efforts to clear unauthorized traders from streets.
On May 20, a task force from the Assembly removed makeshift stalls in key areas of the Central Business District. The operation was supported by the Ghana Police Service.
Michael Kpakpo Allotey, Chief Executive of AMA, assured that trading spaces will be created soon. This aims to accommodate hawkers affected by the decongestion exercise.
Despite these promises, Dr. Zaato remains skeptical. He believes without a solid city-wide policy and consistent enforcement, efforts will remain temporary.
