The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will conduct a decongestion exercise.
This operation targets specific areas on three days, starting Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
On Day 1, the focus will be around the AMA Head Office and Kinbu Road. Other areas include Railways, ECG Junction to King Tackie Tawiah Statue, Zongo Lane, and Opera Square to Adabraka.
Day 2 will cover Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School and Cow Lane. It will also include UTC Road to Timber Market and parts of Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
On Day 3, the remaining portions of the Circle and Kaneshie enclave will be targeted. This includes Pamprom Lane and footbridges.
The three-day exercise is led by AMA and Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA). They are supported by the Ghana Police Service, market leaders, transport unions, and other stakeholders.
The AMA issued a statement on Friday regarding this initiative. It enforces the AMA Hawkers Bye-Laws (2017) and Section 117(1) of the Road Traffic Regulations (2012). These laws prohibit activities that block pedestrian and vehicle movement in public spaces.
The statement was signed by the Head of Public Affairs for Mayor Hon Michael Kpakpo Allotey. It directed all affected individuals to vacate these locations by Monday evening, May 19, 2025.
Prior consultations confirmed enough space exists in designated markets for traders.
Additionally, the AMA plans to introduce a 24-hour city operation model as part of urban renewal. This model includes a clean-up and security task force for better sanitation and safe night-time activities.
The statement urged public support for this exercise. It called for cooperation from affected groups to restore order in the city.
