Accra floods: Mahama alarmed as GARID projects delay

President John Mahama is worried about potential severe floods in Accra. He cited delays in the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) projects.

He urged authorities to speed up work before the rainy season starts.

During a tour with the Anti-Flood Taskforce, he highlighted the need for urgent action. They visited major drainage systems and flood-prone areas.

The GARID project was approved in 2019 under President Akufo-Addo's administration. It received funding from the World Bank to improve drainage and reduce flooding.

President Mahama visited several locations, including Achimota and Mallam Junction. He was accompanied by Deputy Chief of Staff Stanislav Xoese Dogbe and other taskforce members.

At Mallam Junction, Mr. Dogbe raised concerns about Kaitech Motors. The company allegedly filled a Ramsar site and a water retention basin.

He warned that this could worsen flooding in the area. “If this siltation continues, it will cause severe flooding,” he stated.

President Mahama ordered the company to remove the silt. He emphasized restoring the area to prevent further environmental damage.

He said, “Imagine how much water this place can hold when it rains.” Filling it would overwhelm any drain passing through, he added.

At Kaneshie First Light, President Mahama urged contractors to expedite drainage work before rain arrives.

The tour ended at the Odaw drain, where he called on dredging contractors to work faster.

“This GARID project for desilting drains started last year,” he noted. He expressed concern that many projects are behind schedule.

“If they aren’t ready before the rains start, we can expect severe flooding,” he warned.

He expected contractors to work quickly during the dry season but noted they had not done so.

Mahama cautioned citizens of Accra about possible severe flooding due to these delays.

“We must do everything possible to minimize property damage and loss of life,” he stated.

He instructed the GARID secretariat and relevant ministries to ensure projects are expedited as soon as possible.
