The Minority in Parliament is urging the government to act quickly. They want exemptions from the new 10% tariff on Ghanaian exports to the U.S.
The Minority believes this tariff threatens local businesses. It could weaken Ghana's export sector without prompt action.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, made this call. He urged the government to negotiate with U.S. authorities for a waiver.
On social media, he warned that the tariff will raise costs for Ghanaian goods in the U.S. This will make them less competitive in the market.
He stated, “The newly imposed 10% tariff will increase costs for our products.” He added that Ghanaian goods risk losing their competitive edge. This could severely impact businesses and livelihoods dependent on exports.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah emphasized using economic diplomacy efforts under AfCFTA. He said Ghana must engage with the United States to seek a waiver.
He also linked this issue to the government's proposed 24-hour economy initiative. A strong export sector is vital for its success, so quick action is necessary.
The Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have not yet commented on this issue.
Industry players and business associations are expected to respond soon.
