Address water crisis with the same level of commitment as galamsey – Hydrologist

Renowned hydrologist Dr. Anthony Twumasi has called on the government to tackle the water crisis urgently. He wants this issue addressed with the same commitment as illegal mining (galamsey).

On March 24, during the JoyNews AM Show, Dr. Twumasi expressed serious concerns. Many urban areas in Ghana struggle to access clean water.

He noted that while the government is fighting galamsey, it must also focus on water scarcity. "We need an aggressive strategy for this challenge," he said.

Dr. Twumasi emphasized that issues facing Ghana Water Company Limited should be treated as national problems. Immediate action is necessary to address these issues properly.

He urged the government to protect water bodies and manage resources sustainably. This will help prevent further depletion and contamination of water sources.

Recently, cities across Ghana have experienced significant water shortages. Residents relying on Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) face many challenges due to this crisis.

The limited supply of water worsens conditions for many communities, especially during peak demand periods.

GWCL has acknowledged these challenges but cites several reasons for the shortfall. These include galamsey activities, increased demand, environmental degradation, and limited infrastructure.
