The Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Nukpenu, is mourning the death of Joseph Ade Coker. Mr. Coker was the former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC. He reportedly died on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Bank Hospital after a short illness. Party members view his death as a significant loss.
On Sunday, June 1, Mr. Nukpenu spoke on Channel One’s Newsroom with Charles Owusu Kumi. He called Ade Coker’s passing “disturbing” and said it hit the party hard. This is especially true for those who worked closely with him.
Mr. Nukpenu praised Mr. Coker’s legacy as a unifier and dedicated leader. He valued consultation and inclusivity in decision-making processes. According to Mr. Nukpenu, the NDC has lost “a gem.” His contributions since 2009 were invaluable to the party's growth.
“He was always in the media discussing government issues,” Mr. Nukpenu noted. Just two weeks ago, he appeared on several radio stations before his sudden passing. Despite efforts from doctors and prayers from family and pastors, he could not be saved.
“It’s a very disturbing moment for the NDC,” he added. Losing someone so dedicated is difficult for those close to him.
The NDC plans to provide details about funeral arrangements soon. Ade Coker was first elected as Greater Accra Regional Chairman in 2009 and served three consecutive terms. He was well-respected within the party, especially at the grassroots level.
He lost his re-election bid in 2022 to Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore.
