Adenta Kumi’s NIB arrest was to divert public attention – Elvis Darko alleges

Elvis Darko, editor of The Newscenta newspaper, has made serious accusations. He claims the government orchestrated the arrest of NPP youth activist Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi. Darko believes this was a tactic to divert attention from a viral video. The video allegedly shows Supreme Court justices dining with a lawyer for a petitioner.

Darko spoke on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on May 26. He argued that Kumi's arrest was timed deliberately to distract from criticism over the footage. “What happened was a strategy used by the government,” he said. He suggested that when public pressure rises, the government takes actions to shift focus.

The controversial video reportedly shows Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu dining with Thaddeus Sory on May 15. This date coincided with the inaugural sitting of a committee investigating the Chief Justice. Darko noted that this footage caused widespread concern among the public.

He stated that feeling pressured, the government sought to change the narrative by arresting Kumi. “The video was the talk of the town,” he asserted. “In my opinion, they decided to divert attention.”

Kumi was arrested by National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) operatives on May 23. He was later charged with publishing false news. His petition to President John Dramani Mahama questioned the neutrality of justices involved in his case.

Darko insisted that Kumi followed due process in filing his petition. He criticized Kumi's arrest as an abuse of power. “Arrest Adenta Kumi for what?” he asked rhetorically. “He followed the process and petitioned the President.”
