Adenta Kumi release from NIB custody

Alfred Ababbio Kumi, known as Adenta Kumi, has been released from NIB custody. He is a youth activist for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a former parliamentary candidate.

His release followed discussions between security officials and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Kumi was arrested after he petitioned President John Mahama to dissolve a committee investigating the Chief Justice. He faced charges of publishing fake news.

Clement Opoku Gyamfi, Kumi's lawyer, explained the charges against him. They relate to an interview he gave and posts on his X account. The charges also stem from his petition to the President.

Gyamfi noted that Kumi was cautioned before being charged. He mentioned that they have applied for bail as the process continues.

Kumi's petition claimed that committee members undermine the inquiry's integrity. He alleged a meeting occurred on May 15 at Santoku Restaurant involving Justices Gabriel Pwamang and Samuel Adibu-Asiedu, along with Thaddeus Sory.

Kumi stated that this meeting damaged public confidence in the investigation. He pointed out that Justice Pwamang seeks to become Chief Justice after Mahama’s election. Similarly, Justice Adibu-Asiedu has lobbied for the position after Justice Anin Yeboah's exit.

Kumi called the process a potential sham and urged President Mahama to act. In response, Thaddeus Sory denied any such meeting took place in a Facebook post. He labeled Kumi's claims as false and easy to fact-check.
