The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, confirmed that Alfred Ababio Kumi's wife suffered a miscarriage. This occurred after a dramatic raid by state security operatives.
The incident took place on Friday, May 23. It has caused outrage among the public and NPP leaders. Mr. Kodua called the situation deeply distressing during an interview on Joy FM.
“I spoke with his wife, and it is true,” he said. “It is very sad that she suffered a miscarriage.”
Kumi’s mother, Nana Ama Owusu, shared her account on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem. She described how about eight armed men stormed their home at around 5:30 a.m.
“Only one was in police uniform; the rest were in plain clothes,” she said. “They forced their way into my room.”
She recounted the chaos as they tried to enter the compound.
“They struck the gate with their rifles to get in,” she explained. Kumi’s wife rushed out to see what was happening but panicked upon seeing the armed men.
In her attempt to open the gate, she fell and began bleeding profusely after one of them ordered a shot to be fired. Nana Ama revealed that her daughter-in-law was four months pregnant and lost the baby due to shock from the incident.
The family has sought urgent medical attention for her since then.
Mr. Kumi's arrest may relate to comments he made about Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's removal petition, though this is not officially confirmed by police.
The NPP issued a statement accusing the government of using security forces to intimidate opposition members.
Background information shows Mr. Kumi submitted a petition to President John Mahama before his arrest. He called for dissolving a committee investigating Chief Justice Torkornoo's removal.
Kumi alleged misconduct by committee members could compromise their inquiry's credibility.
He accused Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi of meeting with Thaddeus Sory after a hearing on May 15, 2025. Kumi claims they discussed issues related to his petition during this dinner at Santoku Restaurant in Accra.
A video of this supposed meeting has gone viral online, raising questions about its credibility.
