The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Adentan, Hon. Ella Esinam Christine Nongo, announced a large-scale demolition exercise. This is part of efforts to reduce flooding caused by illegal construction on waterways.
Her announcement followed a tour of flood-affected areas on May 19. She was joined by the Member of Parliament for Adentan, Hon. Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, and other officials. They included the Municipal Coordinating Director and heads of various departments.
The team visited communities like Amrahia, Ashieye, and New Legon Rosarosa. Many residents were displaced due to heavy rains. Roads were eroded, vehicles submerged, and access to some areas was cut off.
In New Legon Rosarosa, a bridge collapsed after floods washed away its foundation. Officials found a structure built too close to the bridge. In Ensuonano, parts of the road were completely washed away.
Flooding has been linked to unauthorized developments on watercourses and wetlands. Rainwater from the Akuapem Mountains is obstructed by these constructions. This causes floodwaters to overwhelm low-lying areas in Adentan.
The inspection team later met with representatives from the Ministry of Works and Housing. They were led by Minister Mr. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei and Deputy Director General Hon. Teddy Safori Addi from NADMO.
Hon. Nongo emphasized her administration's commitment to taking necessary actions against flooding. She announced plans for dredging and improved drainage systems for long-term solutions.
A special weekend task force will be formed to stop illegal construction activities at night or on weekends without permits.
Residents expressed strong support for the planned demolitions during their discussions with officials. They highlighted the urgent need for safety and proper planning in their community.
Hon. Adamu Ramadan pledged his full support for this initiative as well. He encouraged the Assembly to use all legal means to restore order in Adentan.
The demolition exercise is expected to start in the coming weeks as part of a flood mitigation strategy. Some structures have already been marked for demolition following the assessment tour.
