Collins Adomako-Mensah, former Deputy Minister for Energy, criticized the government. He is also the Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North. He condemned the recent increase in electricity and water tariffs. He called this move a betrayal of campaign promises.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced new tariff hikes. These increases will take effect on May 3, 2025. Electricity tariffs will rise by an average of 14.75%. Water tariffs will see a 4.02% increase.
In an interview with Channel One TV, Adomako-Mensah expressed his disappointment. He was surprised by the timing and size of these increases. This is especially true given assurances from government officials during the 2024 election campaign.
He noted that political figures had promised to reduce electricity tariffs. This promise was made in light of the "24-hour economy" initiative. Adomako-Mensah specifically mentioned President John Dramani Mahama's commitments.
He questioned the government's dedication to its economic transformation agenda. Despite his criticism, he recognized financial challenges faced by PURC. These include exchange rate pressures from buying power in U.S. dollars while selling in Ghana cedis.
