Isaac Adongo, the MP for Bolgatanga Central, criticized the Minority caucus. He was upset about their quick return to Parliament after a protest. The protest was against the detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.
On May 29, several Minority MPs marched from Parliament to EOCO's headquarters in Accra. They demanded Wontumi's immediate release. He is under investigation for alleged financial irregularities with EXIM Bank. The demonstration caused traffic disruptions and led to a heavy police presence.
Wontumi was arrested on May 27 by the CID of the Ghana Police Service. After his release from CID, EOCO picked him up. Although EOCO granted him bail of GHS50 million on May 28, he still needs two sureties to fulfill bail conditions.
Despite their protest, the Minority MPs returned to Parliament on May 30. This effectively ended their boycott. On that day, Adongo mocked them for abandoning Wontumi after supporting him publicly.
He said, "I think Wontumi will be very sad that you are here." He added that they promised to support him but left him alone at EOCO. Adongo expressed surprise when they disappeared from their protest site by 7 PM.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is reportedly leading efforts to meet Wontumi's bail conditions.
