Adu-Boahene's unexplained wealth calls for accountability; the A-G did no wrong - says Benjamin Kofi Quashie

Mr. Benjamin Kofi Quashie chairs the South African Council of Elders for the NDC. He defended the Attorney-General's recent press briefing about Mr. Kwabena Adu-Boahene. Quashie stated that the A-G was informing the public about corruption issues.

He rejected the idea of trial by public opinion. Quashie emphasized that the A-G acted in good faith by sharing information. He disagreed with Adu-Boahene's lawyers, who criticized the A-G's actions as emotional and politically driven.

Quashie noted that morality should guide actions before laws are established. He argued that Adu-Boahene’s lawyers should not have sent their letter after the A-G's exposé. "The letter lacks logic and makes us all look foolish," he said.

Regarding Adu-Boahene's arrest, Quashie reminded NPP members of past arrests at airports and churches. These actions were meant to ensure accountability among public servants, he explained.

He advised NPP members to be cautious and avoid suggesting that public servants can steal without consequences. Quashie believes legal representation for people like Adu-Boahene could encourage similar behavior among politicians.

"You can steal state resources and then use those funds for legal defense," he stated, calling this problematic. When asked if the A-G was declaring Adu-Boahene guilty in public opinion, Quashie disagreed.

He said if Adu-Boahene had denied claims about his properties, it would indicate wrongdoing. "One doesn't need a law degree to see this is criminal," he added.

Quashie asserted that the A-G is highlighting how state resources have been misappropriated, not being prejudicial against Adu-Boahene. He described this case as damaging to Ghana’s democratic progress.

"I'm not a lawyer, but we must recover stolen funds rather than focus solely on jailing him," he concluded. "We need those resources to build our country for future generations."

Quashie's comments were made during a newspaper review on Kessben FM in Accra on Tuesday.
