Kwabena Adu Boahene, the former Director of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), is facing pressure from ongoing investigations. His lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, stated that Adu Boahene may need to disclose sensitive national security information. This comes as new charges are brought by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
After a court hearing on May 13, Atta Akyea spoke to journalists. He clarified that a leaked memo from Adu Boahene was not a confession. Instead, it was an advisory note meant for the current National Security Coordinator.
The memo warned the Attorney General and EOCO about their handling of the case. It suggested that their actions could jeopardize national security operations. “He’s not afraid to defend himself,” Atta Akyea said.
However, he noted that Adu Boahene is being pushed into sensitive areas. If necessary, he will speak publicly about these matters to defend himself.
Atta Akyea also mentioned that his client had just been released after a seven-day detention. However, EOCO rearrested him over new charges related to internet services for Ghana Water Company.
“At the last sitting, the judge ordered his release,” he explained. “EOCO claimed they had a new matter and rearrested him at midnight.”
Earlier that day, the High Court reinstated Adu Boahene’s bail. The bail amount was initially set at GH¢120 million but reduced to GH¢80 million on May 2, 2025.
Adu Boahene and his wife Angela Adjei-Boateng are on trial for allegedly misappropriating GH¢49.1 million. They face charges alongside Mildred Donkor and Advantage Solutions Limited.
The couple faces 11 counts including conspiracy to commit crime and money laundering. The court has directed the Attorney General's office to file all remaining witness statements by May 20. The case is adjourned until May 26.
