AfCFTA benefits not automatic, businesses must make adequate effort – Yamani Selana

Businesses looking to benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) need strategic efforts. Success under this agreement is not automatic.

Yamani Selana, an international trade expert, spoke during a webinar on April 25, 2025. He emphasized that businesses must engage with authorities to access AfCFTA benefits. Companies need to register and prove their products originate from the region.

Selana advised businesses to work with advisors familiar with customs and tax procedures. This will help them navigate the requirements effectively.

He noted that while AfCFTA aims for a single market, legal differences exist across African countries. Businesses should consult local experts in each jurisdiction.

Selana warned against relying solely on theoretical knowledge or online research. Africa has diverse cultures and economies that require local collaboration.

Entering new markets demands understanding these distinct economies. It’s essential to partner with locals or advisors in those countries instead of just researching online.
