Afanyi Dadzie writes: Heartbreak can turn deadly; choose wisdom over sentiment

Heartbreak can cause intense emotional pain. When mishandled, it may lead to serious harm.

Matters of the heart can become life-threatening. We should never treat them lightly. This is especially true when dealing with emotions and trust.

I was prompted to write after reading about a shocking incident. A 30-year-old woman in Ghana was arrested for pouring acid on her ex-boyfriend.

The police reported that the man ended their relationship. She made an unannounced visit to him afterward. While driving her home, she brought up the breakup again. When he confirmed it for the third time, she attacked him with acid.

Passersby rushed him to the hospital. The woman fled but was arrested on June 3, 2025.

I don’t excuse anyone’s actions, but let’s be honest. Why expose yourself to someone who is hurting? Inviting them over could be risky.

I once ended a relationship for good reasons and never regretted it. I left personal items with my ex and asked to send someone for them. She insisted I come myself, but I refused.

Eventually, she had no choice but to send my things back. My decision wasn’t based on fear of violence; I understood heartbreak's emotional weight. I chose wisdom and safety instead.

Even later, I faced spiritual battles tied to that breakup. I'm not saying you should be hostile toward an ex—just be wise.

During a breakup, emotions can run high and anger simmers beneath the surface. Some people lose control during these times.

Avoid physical contact if possible until emotions settle down and healing begins.

Not everyone can handle rejection or loss without lashing out. Stay alert and protect your space; harm may not come directly from the person involved.

People plot against others or act out through third parties. In love and loss, choose wisdom over sentiment—it could save your life.
