Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and MP for Bawku Central, has made a statement. He claims that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin is spreading rumors. These rumors suggest President John Mahama is planning a third term.
Ayariga insists that the NDC and Mahama are not pursuing this agenda. Afenyo Markin spoke at an NPP press conference on May 1. He announced plans for a peaceful demonstration to uphold the law.
Markin emphasized that this fight is for all citizens. He stated no one, regardless of power, is above the law. He called for an end to division and anger from the past.
Markin criticized Mahama's nomination of seven judges to the Supreme Court. He believes this move indicates a hidden agenda for a third term. According to him, the NDC aims to set up this plan through their leadership.
In response, Ayariga told Citi Prime News on May 2 that Markin is misleading Ghanaians. He noted he hasn't heard discussions about a third term among Ghanaians or NDC strategists.
Ayariga pointed out that concerns about Mahama running for a third term arose before his candidacy announcement for 2024. Some even threatened legal action against him over these concerns.
Meanwhile, Justin Frimpong Kodua, General Secretary of the NPP, echoed similar allegations against the NDC. He claimed they are plotting to give Mahama a third term as well.
Kodua linked this plot to attempts to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo. He argued it relates to Article 66(2) of the Constitution regarding presidential terms.
He suggested some individuals want to interpret Article 66(2) differently. They aim to argue that two-term limits apply only to consecutive terms.
