Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy initiative. He called it a “political gimmick” that has not delivered on its promises.
Afenyo-Markin spoke at a Minority press conference after the President's address. He accused the government of relying on symbolic gestures instead of real policy changes.
“It is rich to hear the President say the 24-Hour Economy will be in the 2025 budget,” he stated. “But what did we hear? Another ‘matriki wo’!”
He mocked the government's approach, noting they formed another committee for this program. “Yesterday, as typical of them, they inaugurated another committee for the 24-Hour Economy,” he said.
The Minority Leader questioned President Mahama’s commitment to this initiative. “Ei President Mahama… ‘3baa ne s3n?’ 24-Hour Economy atɔ nsuom!” he added.
His comments reflect growing skepticism from opposition members. They argue that despite high-level talk, there are few results in job creation or economic growth.
The 24-Hour Economy initiative aims to extend working hours in key sectors. It was introduced by Mahama as a major labor and productivity reform.
The government claims pilot phases have started in some public institutions like DVLA and Passport Office. However, the opposition believes these efforts are mostly symbolic and lack depth to transform the economy.
