Afenyo-Markin proposes MPs' hospital and a new parliamentary chamber, Ayariga opposes

Afenyo Markin, a Member of Parliament for Effutu, has put forth a proposal to establish a dedicated hospital for lawmakers and construct a new parliamentary chamber. During discussions on the budget allocation for Parliament, he emphasized that such facilities would enhance the health and working conditions of MPs, enabling them to better serve their constituents. Markin argued that given the demands of their roles, lawmakers deserve specialized medical care and an upgraded space to conduct their legislative duties.

However, this idea was met with resistance from fellow MP Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, who criticized the proposal as extravagant and unnecessary. Pelpuo contended that focusing on improving healthcare access for all Ghanaians should take precedence over creating exclusive amenities for parliamentarians. He urged his colleagues to consider the broader implications of such initiatives on public perception and fiscal responsibility.

The debate reflects ongoing tensions within Parliament regarding resource allocation and the need for equitable services amid rising public expectations for accountability and transparency in governance.
